Ashlynn Birch is the youngest of five children - all the others of which are males. Thus, raised in a house filled with brothers, she has few inclinations toward the more modest mannerisms and trades commonly attributed to women. Nevertheless, she is not without knowledge of social graces altogether - her mother, a former governess, taught all her children the knowledge usually reserved for the noble-born...letters, numbers, and an awareness of Fastheld's history and the vast intricacies of the houses within its walls. Combined with the tutelage of a neighbor - a retired guardsman who makes a living off of breaking and training horses - Ashlynn had eventually found her way into the empire's vast network of courier services.

She was content to explore the empire in this manner, following its trails of communications to each corner and collecting stories along the way. Inevitably, her travels took her through many of the more tumultuous events that have plagued Fastheld - including into the lands beyond the walls. It was during these times that she managed to make the personal acquaintance of the emperor, Talus Kahar XIV, who conferred upon her the title of baronet. Their relationship continued to grow throughout various adventures until he publicly announced his intent to take her as his wife. However, he died of the Dark Pox before it could happen.

Heartsick at his death and the rise of a Zahir to the imperial throne, Ashlynn retreated for over a year from regular contact with even close friends, preferring only the company of Vhramis Wolfsbane or the minimal number of contacts necessary to maintain a steady income ferrying or writing letters.
